“Let’s Make It Short” Devotionals
“10 The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. 11 The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd. 12 And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. 13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” (Ecclesiastes 12:10-13)
Are you truly devoted to God? Perhaps you view putting God first as a brief daily “devotional” each morning at breakfast. You’ve checked it off your to-do list, thinking, “All done for the day.” Then, you proceed with your routine, forgetting about God. While devotionals can be helpful, this approach doesn’t truly put God first. Dedicating only the first five minutes of your day to God, with nothing more, is hollow. How much of that time are you genuinely focusing on Him?
Be wary of devotions that aren’t centered on God. “Let your heart therefore be perfect with the Lord our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.” (1 Kings 8:61). It’s right to set the Lord before you in all you do (Psalm 16:8). However, be cautious not to elevate human words and wisdom above God’s Words and wisdom, for you cannot serve two masters (Luke 16:13). In everything you do or say, aim to glorify God (Colossians 3:17), so that you may please Him, bear fruit, and grow in your understanding of Him (Colossians 1:10).
Be wholly devoted to God. Are you committed to God and His ministry (1 Corinthians 16:15)? Do you serve the Lord without distractions (1 Corinthians 7:35)? Is your life offered as a holy, acceptable, and living sacrifice to God (Romans 12:1)? This is indeed a high calling. But take heart—in Christ, He strengthens you to do all that aligns with His will (Philippians 4:13).
Put God first by dedicating every aspect of your life to Him.
How It Applies To You
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
The call to prioritize God. Putting God first requires significant life changes, demanding dedication and genuine effort. As you reflect on this message, consider how to prioritize God. It’s not about a brief morning devotional or checking off a spiritual to-do list. Instead, it’s about developing a passionate, all-encompassing love for God that permeates every aspect of your life.
Beyond surface-level devotion. Challenge yourself to go beyond surface-level devotion and dive deep into a relationship with your Creator. Make a conscious effort to involve God in every decision, action, and thought. Remember, this journey isn’t about perfection but progress.
Surrendering to God’s transformation. As you surrender more of yourself to God, you’ll find He becomes the center of your world, transforming your heart and aligning your desires with His. This shift may seem daunting, but take heart—God is with you every step of the way, ready to guide and strengthen you as you prioritize Him above all else.
