“Let’s Get Out Of Here,” Fellowship Fleeing

“Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:25)

Are you ministering to your brothers and sisters in Christ? Perhaps the idea of relating to your fellow believers makes you uncomfortable. Maybe some seem hypocritical or overly concerned with appearances. But are you any better? Can you cast the first stone? Here’s a radical idea: Be real. Be honest and genuine. Lead with your vulnerabilities. Take action. Serve them. Love them as God loves them (John 15:12). Love them because you love God and want to worship Him by loving those He loves (1 John 4:7-12).

Be mindful of your fellowship choices. Do you spend more time with unbelievers than your church family? Are you unequally yoked with them? If so, be cautious—unrighteousness and darkness are contrary to righteousness and light (2 Corinthians 6:14). Those who walk together do so in agreement (Amos 3:3). You become like the people you surround yourself with (1 Corinthians 15:33)! It’s crucial to fellowship more with believers, for Jesus said, “…where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). You should have fellowship with both the church and God (1 John 1:3). As we read in 1 John 1:5-7, “God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.” This passage reminds us that true fellowship with God and each other comes from walking in His light, which cleanses us from sin through Jesus Christ. (1 John 1:3-7).

Fellowship as citizens of God’s household. The Psalmist beautifully expresses the joy of fellowship: “We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company” (Psalm 55:14). (Psalm 55:14). As Ephesians 2:19-20 reminds us, we are “no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God,” united in Christ, our foundation and cornerstone.

Fellowship as the body of Christ. Paul used the analogy of a body to describe the church. He spoke of “…members of his (Christ’s) body, of his flesh, and of his bones” (Ephesians 5:30). As such, the body “…hath many members…” (1 Corinthians 12:12), yet it remains unified as “…one body in Christ, and every one members one of another” (Romans 12:5). Jesus prayed for unity among believers, that they may be one as He and the Father are one, so the world may believe in Him and know God’s love (John 17:21-23). Be unified in thought, word, and judgment, perfectly together without division (1 Corinthians 1:10).

Fellowship through helping others. Paul exhorts the church to “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2), and to be “Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality” (Romans 12:13). He calls us to “…consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works…” (Hebrews 10:24). The writer of Hebrews urges us to “…do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased” (Hebrews 13:16). Moreover, remember to serve your Christian leaders with love and faithfulness (1 Timothy 6:2).
