Jesse’s Journal – #4
“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.” (1 John 3:1)
As I continue my journey in recovery, I can see how shame has long been a companion to my sex addiction, fueling feelings of inadequacy, self-pity, and self-loathing. I am still battling with feelings of worthlessness, which drive me to perpetuate those destructive patterns to numb the pain.
But my amazing Lord and Savior, Jesus, offers me unconditional love, grace, compassion, and forgiveness through His shed blood on the cross of Calvary. Despite my past and my continued slip-ups, His grace pursues me on all sides. He tells me, “I’ve got this, Jesse. I love you so much. I did it all for you. I forgive you. Rest in me.”
How It Relates To You
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
Like me, you might be struggling with shame from sexual addiction or other ongoing battles. The weight of past mistakes and current struggles can feel overwhelming at times. But I want you to know that God’s love remains constant through it all, and His grace is more significant than any struggles of the flesh. Through Christ’s transformative power and unconditional love, we can break free from shame’s grip on our lives and walk in the freedom He provides.
Reflection Questions:
- How have personal struggles (perhaps addiction) and shame impacted your relationships with God and others?
- What lies about your identity have you believed because of these struggles, and what does God say about who you are?
- How can you accept God’s grace when you make mistakes and learn to forgive yourself?
Scripture to Remember:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)
Hold onto this powerful truth in moments when shame tries to overwhelm you with lies. Remember that God’s forgiveness is always available, no matter how far you feel you’ve fallen. When shame whispers that you’re unworthy or beyond redemption, cling to the promise that God’s grace is more significant than any mistake. His forgiveness isn’t based on our worthiness but on His unchanging love and the finished work of Christ on the cross.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for Your unfailing love and grace. Help me let go of the shame I carry from my struggles in the flesh and embrace the freedom You provide through Christ. When I feel worthless after giving in to temptations or making mistakes, it reminds me that Jesus paid for my redemption. Give me the strength to see myself as Your beloved child, even in my struggles. Help me show myself the same grace You continually show me.
In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
