My Recovery Is A Work In Progress

Jesse’s Journal – #12:

“For it is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:63, KJV)

My 12-step program, with Jesus as my Highest Power, has brought about transformative changes in my life. But it’s not always easy.

As I navigate the difficulties of my recovery, it’s all too easy to sink into depression. I must learn to identify positive growth and focus on progress, not perfection. I have to learn to choose a higher attitude.

But, oh, how I compare my progress to others! Recovery isn’t defined by external circumstances or measured against someone else’s criteria. Instead, it’s a profoundly personal journey where progress is marked by how I treat myself and those around me. It’s a work from the inside out, transforming my heart.

How It Relates To You:

“But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9, KJV)

Like me, you might struggle with perfectionism in your recovery journey. It’s easy to get caught up in comparing your progress to others or feeling discouraged when you don’t meet your own high expectations. But remember, recovery isn’t a race or a competition—it’s a deeply personal journey of transformation.

Your path to healing and growth is unique to you. What matters most isn’t how quickly you progress or how your journey compares to others but rather the small, consistent steps you take each day toward becoming who God created you to be. Each time you choose honesty over denial, each moment you practice self-reflection instead of self-judgment, and every instance you reach out for help instead of struggling alone – these are all victories worth celebrating.

Reflection Questions:

  • How do you handle comparing your progress to others in your recovery journey? What helps you stay focused on your own path?
  • In what ways has choosing a higher attitude helped you navigate difficult moments in your recovery?
  • What small victories or signs of progress have you noticed in your transformation journey that you can celebrate today?

Scripture to Remember:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10, KJV)

Remember this core truth: Recovery isn’t about being perfect but progressing on your unique path. God has designed a specific journey for each person’s recovery. Instead of measuring yourself against others, focus on your growth and celebrate each small step forward. Your daily commitment to healing, supported by God’s grace, truly matters.

Prayer:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for walking with me on this recovery journey. Help me focus on my healing path rather than comparing myself to others. Grant me wisdom to see transformation in the small victories and strength to keep moving forward. Thank You for Your sustaining grace.

In Jesus’ name, amen.
